Here are our five top books that inspire wanderlust – be prepared to travel around the world through the art of fiction:

Road to Rouen by Ben Hatch

Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

EPL – as it is known in shorthand – is one of the famous go-to books that inspire wanderlust. The author sets off on a voyage of self-discovery from Rome (for the food), to India (finding a spiritual god) and on to Bali (the quest to find harmony and balance in her life). This well-known book is extremely readable and wonderfully evocative of each location.

The Beach by Alex Garland

This is another novel that finds itself amongst the top iconic travel novels ever. Set in Thailand (not far from Ko Phi Phi) it is one community’s search for the perfect place, the Eden where everyone can co-exist. Us by David Nicholls

Longlisted for the 2014 Man Booker Prize, this book is a delight. One small family, with a wobbly marriage at the heart, set out for a modern day Grand Tour of Europe. With stops along the way for a bit of ruminating and sight seeing – in Amsterdam, Paris, Munich and more, and some family dynamics that will be familiar to many. Well-observed, it is full of humour and poignancy. If you’re debating whether to book a European trip, Us is a must read!
