Out and About in Torquay

Our first thought when booking a holiday is usually to look abroad for an exotic destination but what if the perfect coastal break was closer to home than you might think?

In the Victorian Era, Torquay was treated as a fashionable resort for the rich and now-a-days the area is nicknamed The English Riviera for a reason. In the height of summer the sight of palm trees gently swaying in the breeze set back from the glittering waters can really create an ambience of a relaxing Mediterranean holiday.

For many years, we’ve considered Torquay as one of the favourite holiday destinations within the United Kingdom, and we aren’t alone. Torquay has plenty to offer!

For a number of years Torbay beach was awarded one of the best beaches in the country, and if you look hard enough there are plenty of secluded beaches tucked away.

Ansteys Cove, a small shingle beach tucked between Torquay and Babbacombe is said to be a great location if you want to have a bite to eat or a paddle.

Author Agatha Christie was said to have a romantic encounter here with a man called Amyas, a name that she later gave to the lead character in her novel ‘Five Little Pigs’, and if you’re a Christie fan, then you’d be in seventh heaven at Greenway House, which was the writer’s holiday home during the 1950s.

The Grade II listed house and grounds are now owned by The National Trust and is open to the public. Walking into Greenway house is like stepping back in time, a must see for any fan. The grounds boast panoramic views over the river Dart and if you look hard enough you’ll see where Christie got inspiration for the settings in her books.

And if you enjoy water sports then you’d be in the perfect place. Stand up paddle boarding is a fantastic way to see the waters without waves, resulting in a relaxing cruise.

However, if you’re looking for a more eccentric trip out, look no further than Babbacombe Model Village. As you walk around you’ll find Stonehenge, Albert Square and a fire-breathing dragon to name a few. With 412 Buildings and 13,160 people in total, there’s never a dull moment.

If you enjoy holidays with outdoor adventure and discovery then our travel consultants can organise the perfect coastal break for you.
