Our Favourite Christmas Market Cruises

What makes Christmas so special? For us, it’s sharing the best of everything with the entire family, from the finest foods to intricate decorations and traditional gifts.

But while we’re excellent at celebrating Christmas in the UK, the rest of the world is way ahead of us in capturing that festive spirit and creating the little treats that make the season so spectacular.

Start your Christmas with a cruise around some of Europe’s most incredible Christmas markets – here are just a few of our favourites.

Belgium and the Netherlands – P&O Cruises

Bruges is something of a fairy tale city at any time of year, but it’s at Christmas the magic really happens.

This unforgettable cruise stops at Bruges long enough for you to explore all of its wonderful Christmas markets. You’ll sample a wide range of chocolates, find one-of-a-kind gifts and decorations, and marvel at the city’s breathtaking buildings dressed in seasonal fairy lights.

The cruise also stops in Amsterdam for another round of shopping. Amsterdam’s streets are always home to exquisite decorations, both above your head and on the stalls. And when you’ve earned a break from the hard work of retail, step onto the huge ice rink that’s right outside the iconic Rijksmuseum.

Rhine and Yuletide Markets River Cruise – Riviera Travel

Nobody does Christmas like Germany. On this cruise, you’ll sail in luxury aboard the five-star MS Emily Bronte, taking in the very best Christmas markets and displays the country has to offer.

You’ll be able to take a stroll around the Rudesheim market and browse the many stalls of treats including delicious gingerbread. You’ll also stop in historic Frankfurt, home to one of the longest traditions of Christmas markets in the world.

There’s even time to stop off in Koblenz for one of the region’s largest markets and some festive music, while a visit to Cologne is the perfect place to meet Santa and tell him all about your list.

Germany, Denmark and Norway – P&O Cruises

Sailing aboard the family-friendly Aurora, you’ll get a wide range of festive experiences as part of this fantastic cruise from P&O.

It starts with a trip to the ancient city of Hamburg, where crafts and clowns come together in a market hosted by the city’s most famous circus. Next, in Copenhagen, Tivoli Gardens is packed with entertainment, events and more than 60 stalls offering everything from decorations to festive foods.

Ideal for the entire family, the cruise also includes a few once-in-a-lifetime fairy-tale experiences in Amsterdam and Bruges, as well as plenty of snow-capped Christmas magic in Oslo.

The Cities of Light Cruise – Viking River Cruises

While it’s available all year round, the Cities of Light cruise is a perfect fit for the festive season as it winds through many of Europe’s most stunning cities.

Over the course of 12 days, you’ll get opportunities to take in a number of historic landmarks from castles to cathedrals. But passing through Germany and the Czech Republic, you’ll also find traditional Christmas markets that are the ideal places to get some pan-European gifts and decorations.

What’s more, the cruise includes a visit to Paris – the romantic city that only becomes more magical in the festive season. There, we’d recommend the Christmas market on the Champs Elysees, home to regional crafts, tasty treats, and gifts of all shapes and sizes.
